Amber color, small white head with little retention & ok lacing. This brown ale is NOT brown

Smell: 3
I seriously cannot smell anything, not even in my Duvel Tulip - WTF? Ok, maybe a faint amount of malt now that it has warmed up, but that's it.


Taste: 5
Up Front: Bland, malt. Finish: Same, and this one has a strange finish to it as well

Mouthfeel: 6
Light body, low carbonation

Drinkability: 5
I could not even finish this one

Overall Impression:
It looked great, smelled ok, but it was flat out boring after that. The flavor that was present was good, but there was not nearly enough of it. This reminds me of a beer that one of the Evil 2 would put out.

Dark brown/almost black color, clear, solid head with good retention & lacing

Smell: 9
Sweet malt, espresso, molasses, hint of black licorice

Taste: 9.5
Up Front: Sweet malt, chocolate, espresso. Finish: Malt, dark fruit, and pronounced licorice and molasses on the back end

Mouthfeel: 8.5
Full body with medium/low carbonation, slightly sticky and cloying

Drinkability: 8.5

Very warming - it is 13% abv - DUH

Overall Score: 8.9

Overall Impression:
WOW!!!!!! This is a powerful beer! Not just in abv, but in flavor. There is a lot going on, and the flavor just goes on and on. The sweetness is not balanced out by the hops, so that makes this one more of an after dinner/night cap, one-and-done type of beer. Tremendous value too. If you like strong beers, you gotta give this one a try!

For some reason, I thought this would be a Rye Beer. I also assumed the brewery was in NY. And finally I thought my eyes were deceiving me when I saw the price for a 13% 13yr anniversary beer - Hahaha!!!
